PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for easily producing a 4,8-dodecadienedioic acid useful as a water-soluble grinding oil, a water-soluble antiseptic agent, etc., in metal working or its process by a safe and simple operation. SOLUTION: The 4,8-dodecadienedioic acid is produced e.g. by carrying out Beckmann fragmentation of 2-methoxy-5,9-cyclododecadiene oxime with formic acid in the presence of hydroxylamine and hydrolyzing the obtained reaction product containing 4,8-dodecadiene dinitrile as a new substance or the 4,8- dodecadiene dinitrile separated from the reaction product under mild hydrolysis condition.
