ANTIDEPRESSANT COMPOSITION CONTAINING POLYGALA PLANT EXTRACT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an antidepressant composition containing the extract from a polygala plant such as Polygala tenuifolia Willd. as an active ingredient.

SOLUTION: This antidepressant composition contains, as the active ingredient, a clinically effective amount of component(s) included in one or more liquids selected from the group consisting of (1) a polar solvent extract liquid obtained by extraction of the polygala plant with a polar solvent, (2) an aqueous fraction obtained by extraction of the liquid (1) with a 1st organic solvent, (3) an organic solvent elute obtained by elution of the liquid (1) or fraction (2) by reverse-phase chromatography and (4) a filtrate obtained by filtration of the elute (3) and containing a substance ≤30 kD in molecular weight.
