PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of easily forming a finished surface of a sandstone tone having three-dimensional configurations and delicate changes of colors in decreased process steps without being affected by the skill of a constructor. SOLUTION: This method comprises (1) forming a base layer having microscopic ruggedness by aggregate over the entire surface of a surface to be coated by coating a base material with a coating material containing the aggregate and a binder, (2) coating a portion of the base layer surface with the coating material of the same color as the color of (1) or a color similar to or different therefrom prior to drying of the base layer to form a pattern layer having a macroscopic ruggedness, (3) flattening the microscopic ruggedness by the aggregate by stroking the front surface of the pattern layer and a portion of the base layer surface by using a brush containing water and/or solvent prior to drying of the pattern layer, and (4) drying the entire part of the layer.
