PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spindle head falling prevention device for a machine tool capable of preventing the falling of a spindle head in cutting a winding member of a winding transmission gear. SOLUTION: The spindle head 2 is liftably guided to a column 1 by a feed screw mechanism 3. A drive force of a motor 7 is transmitted to the feed screw mechanism 3 via the winding transmission gear 6. The spindle head 2 is connected to a cylinder rod 15 of a balance cylinder 13 of a balancer 12 via a support chain 16 and upward energized by the balancer 12. When cutting detecting means 27 detects the cutting of a timing belt 10 of the winding transmission gear 6, control means 28 demagnetizes a solenoid valve 24 of the balancer 12, closes a feed/exhaust port of the balance cylinder 13 so as not to exhaust, prevents the moving of the cylinder rod 15, and prevents the falling of the spindle head 2.
