PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating method by which coating is stably started up with a simple structure and a coating film is successively formed so as to hardly cause defects in the method for forming the coating film on a long and wide sized coating film surface by applying various liquid compositions on a continuously traveling web. SOLUTION: In this coating method for applying a coating liquid 20 on one of the surfaces of a web 12 traveling along a web traveling passage by a coating means 14, a distance H equal to or below (h) expressed by formula 1 is provided between the web and the tip of a coating head 16 and excess coating layer formed on the web surface is scraped by a rod line member 18 direct after the coating to form a coating layer having a prescribed coating thickness.
