<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a method for the regeneration treatment of an adsorbent generating no wastewater problem, not merely moving a substance capable of becoming a pollutant between media but capable of fundamentally subjecting the substance to decomposition treatment and an apparatus using this method, and a method for efficiently utilizing an acting substance necessary for decomposition and an apparatus using this method. <P>SOLUTION: The adsorbent having adsorbed a substance capable of being decomposed in the presence of chlorine capable of becoming a pollutant by light irradiation is heated to obtain the substance. This substance is converted to a gaseous state and air containing the gaseous substance and chlorine is formed and subsequently irradiated with light to decompose the substance.
