PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading/recording apparatus capable of being reduced in size and in cost. SOLUTION: A carriage 4 is equipped with a drive switching gear 41 for transferring a driving force to a reading drive gear chain 42 only on a drive switching position. When a reading command is issued, the carriage 4 moves to the drive switching position. As a result, the driving of the recording drive gear chain and the reading drive gear chain 42 can be performed by means of a driving motor as a common driving source. A manuscript and a recording sheet do not need to pass through different conveyance passages and share the identical conveyance passage so that it is possible to realize miniaturizing of the apparatus and reduction of the cost.
