PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a useful method for diagnosing schizophrenia, and a primer and a kit used for the method based on resultant information obtained by elucidating relevance to schizophrenia through analyzing a structure of a human N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) receptor gene.

SOLUTION: Disclosed is a method for detecting an increased risk and/or symptom severity featured by obtaining a human N-methyl-D-aspartic acid receptor 2A subunit gene from a human nucleic acid sample and measuring a repetition number of a two base repeated sequence, (GT)n/(CA)n, existing on an upstream promoter region of the gene.
