PURPOSE: An extract fraction of Hovenia dulcis Thunb. branches and a polysaccharide fraction separated from the same exhibiting a reducing effect on hepatotoxicity, hangover and fatigue are provided Therefore, they are useful as prophylactic and therapeutic agents for the prevention and treatment of various liver diseases. CONSTITUTION: One to four year old Hovenia dulcis Thunb. branches are extracted in water or lower alcohol, the extract is passed though an ion exchange column with a sodium chloride solution as an eluent to produce a polymeric polysaccharide having a molecular weight of 20,000D or more. The Hovenia dulcis Thunb. is Hovenia dulcis var. Koreana Nakai, Hovenia dulcis var. tomentella Makino, Hovenia dulcis var. latifolia Nakai.
