PURPOSE: A device and a method for correcting luminance for an image display device are provided to compensate the drop in luminance caused by the reduction of electron emission capacity when using a CDT monitor for a long time, wherein R,G,B output signal levels are changed for compensating the luminance by sensing the beam current introduced into the CDT monitor. CONSTITUTION: A method for correcting luminance for an image display device includes the steps of presetting and storing a test display pattern and a negative current for a test for the test display pattern, measuring a negative current after displaying the test display pattern(520), comparing the preset negative current reference value with the measured negative current value(540), computing a difference value between the reference value and the measured value(550,560), correcting a cut-off output level for image signals by the computed difference value(570), and resetting and storing the measured value as a reference value(580).
