<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a technique for improving the display contrast of a projection type display. <P>SOLUTION: A projection optical system of the projection type display separates the luminous flux projected by an illumination optical system 100 having an extra-high pressure mercury lamp into components of red luminous flux, green luminous flux, and blue luminous flux which are modulated by liquid crystal panels 431, 421, and 411 and put together by a cross dichroic prism 400 to form a color image, which is projected by a projection part 500 on a screen SC. A blue attenuation filter provided on an explosion-proof glass 113 at a lighting opening part of a lighting device 110 attenuates the blue component at the circumferential part of the luminous flux and the rate of a high- contrast component of light in use is increased to use a liquid crystal panel 411, so that the display contrast can be improved. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
