A series of heterocyclic substituted piperazines of formula (I), methods of treatment, pharmaceutical compositions containing them, and intermediates used in their manufacture is disclosed, wherein the variables shown in formula (I) are as described in the specification. These compounds of formula (I) selectively inhibit binding to the alpha -1a adrenergic receptor, a receptor that has been implicated in benign prostatic hyperplasia and as such they are potentially useful in the treatment of this disease.
