The impact absorber (1) for a motor vehicle steering column (3) which can slide axially to a retracted position has a deformable shaft (13) and a non-deformable guide (11) fixed axially with respect to the column and chassis mounting (5), but slidable on impact. There is a non-deformable wedge (17) between the deformable shaft and the guide and which is adjustable to vary the resistance to movement. Claims include a steering column using the absorber.
