PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image detector for detecting a fluorescence emitted from a bill at high sensitivity by a mechanism capable of efficiently irradiating the bill with ultraviolet ray in an ellipsoidal shape, and an automated cash handling device. SOLUTION: In this detector, the light from the ultraviolet emitting elements 4a-4e of a fluorescent image detector 1 is radiated in an ellipsoidal form by the extension in the longitudinal direction (x-direction) of the bill 17 and the convergence in the lateral direction (y-direction) by use of a flat convex cylindrical lens with concave 8 comprising cylindrical concaves 9a-9e provided on a flat convex lens. The fluorescence 12 from the bill 17 is detected by light receiving elements 5a-5h. According to such a structure, since the light emitting elements can be arranged with a longitudinally wide space, the light receiving element and the light emitting elements can be arranged in the same line on one substrate. Since the light receiving elements thus can receive the light just above the radiating position, the detecting sensitivity is improved. Two or more light emitting elements differed in emitting wavelength can be arranged. Further, two or more light receiving elements having wavelength sensitivities corresponding thereto can be arranged in the same line as the light emitting elements, and a multipurpose fluorescence detector capable of detecting a plurality of kinds of emitted lights or reflected lights can be constituted.
