PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization lighting unit which can lights up a light valve being a body to be lit, with light having an excellent polarization degree and high luminance, and to provide a projection type display. SOLUTION: The polarization lighting unit has a light source, a 1st lens plate which splits light source luminous flux emitted by the light and emits them, a 2nd lens plate which receives and emits the pieces of luminous flux from the 1st lens plate, a polarization converting element composed of a composite prism member having a plurality of polarization separation surfaces which receives the pieces of luminous flux from the 2nd lens plate and polarize and separate the pieces of luminous flux into transmitted P-polarized luminous flux and reflected S-polarized luminous flux and a plurality of reflecting surfaces which receive the pieces of S-polarized luminous flux reflected by the polarization separating surfaces and reflect them to the same direction with the pieces of P-polarized luminous flux transmitted through the polarization separation surfaces and a 1/2-wavelength phase plate which is arranged on a projection surface of the composite prism member and equalizes the polarization direction of one of the P-polarized luminous flux and S-polarized luminous flux to that of the other piece of luminous flux, and a shading member which is arranged between the 1st lens plate and polarization converting element, and is characterized in that the shading member is formed of beltlike shading materials which are arranged in parallel at equal intervals and have a plurality of identical widths and the widths of the beltlike shapes of the shading materials are narrower than the width of the gap formed with adjacent shading materials.
