Riluzole as a stimulant of glutamate transport and therefore useful for treating cerebellum dysfunction caused by a poor supply of glutamate

It has found that riluzole stimulates the transport of glutamate in rat cerebellar preparations. Thus, a method is described for the prevention or treatment of cerebellar dysfunction, particularly cerebellar ataxia, especially that due to a poor supply of glutamate to the cerebellar cells, by the use of riluzole or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
