A hoist 101 for lifting an invalid has an upright support 6 and an arm member 7 that can be hydraulically raised or lowered, on a wheeled base frame 1, detachably connected to a maneuverable carriage assembly 11 that has a battery-powered motor that drives a set of wheels 14. The carriage is steerable by a shaft 21 having a pair of handlebars attached to the back of the hoist. The carriage 11 can be pivoted to a raised position to be stowed when not in use.
