PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an excessive temperature rise due to the oxidation of particulate matters generated in a gasoline engine, especially a lean-burn gasoline engine.
SOLUTION: The internal combustion engine oxidizes particulate matters generated by the combustion of gasoline in a combustion chamber, in an exhaust emission control device disposed in an exhaust passage. If the exhaust emission control device suffers an excessive temperature rise or is liable to suffer the excessive temperature rise, an air-fuel ratio controlling means shifts a current air-fuel ratio to a richer level to reduce an oxygen supply to the exhaust emission control device. In the exhaust emission control device, the oxidation speed of particulate matters is repressed to prevent the excessive temperature rise.
COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
