PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a moving picture recording method capable of efficiently realizing high-speed reproduction and edit applied to video data subjected to variable length compression and to provide a reproducing method, an edit method and apparatus. SOLUTION: In multiplexing compressed video, audio data and recording the multiplexed data on a disk or a semiconductor memory, frame position information being a relative value from a head of the multiplexed data with respect to a start position of a GOP (group of picture) being a set of a plurality of frames, an end position of one in-frame encoded frame or more and an end position of one forward prediction encoded frame or more by each GOP is recorded in the above medium. The high-speed reproduction is implemented by referencing the frame position information. Further, adopting a pointer pointing out the frame position managed by the frame position information can edit the recorded multiplexed data without changing the data. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
