<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus for preventing nonuniformity in a charging pitch to reduce an electric discharge product and the amount of ozone generation, to obtain the image forming apparatus for normally developing an electrostatic latent image with a proper amount of toner in spite of the change of charging performance in a charging device and also to provide a tandem type image forming apparatus with which the life of a photosensitive drum is prolonged and the cartridge of the photosensitive drum is made usable for a long term. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is provided with an image carrier body 2 for carrying the electrostatic latent image, a charging device 1 arranged so as to be brought into contact with the image carrier body, and a developing unit 3 for developing the electrostatic latent image with toner under application of DC voltage. Voltage obtained by superimposing an AC component on a DC component is applied to the charging device and the average charging potential Vhavg (V) of the image carrier body is adjusted to satisfy the range of (1). The frequency f (Hz) of the AC component is adjusted to be equal to or less than 2 kHz and also to satisfy (1) and (2).
