An aerostat comprises an envelope (10) containing a carrier gas (14), a ballast reservoir (12) and some means for loading and unloading a payload. It also includes one or more balloons (20) filled with hydrogen arranged in the envelope and emerging in the carrier gas. The balloon(s) are connected to the outside of the envelope by systems for emptying (21) and filling (22) with hydrogen. An Independent claim is also included for the transportation of a heavy payload to a site (S3) using this aerostat. The hydrogen is produced on site (claimed) or stored on site in liquid form (claimed). The site can be installed on a ship and include a power station capable of feeding an installation for the electrolysis of sea water to produce the hydrogen (claimed).
