PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a direct current breaker downsizable with a simple structure. SOLUTION: An elastic electrode (plate spring 10) and a fixed electrode 20 are provided. These two electrodes are normally in contact with each other. Switching between interruption/continuity is effected by inserting/withdrawing an insulating plate between the two electrodes. Reliable interruption of a direct current is achieved by a simple configuration to insert/withdraw the insulating plate between the electrodes. There is no need for any hermetic structure for sealing a cooling gas or any space for extending arc by a magnetic field, which allows downsizing and low-cost fabrication. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
