PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a setting method of recording and reproducing laser power, and a recording and reproducing apparatus for properly obtaining an optimum laser power for recording or reproduction in a short time. SOLUTION: A test pattern is recorded/reproduced on/from a recording and reproducing area of a magneto-optical recording medium as a test while changing at least either of a recording laser power and a reproduction laser power. A difference between the number of recording marks obtained from a reproducing signal on the basis of the test pattern and the number of recording marks used for the recording is obtained, and the recording or reproduction laser power is set from a range of the recording or reproduction laser power when the difference reaches a prescribed number or below. The laser power set as above indicates an optimum laser power capable of reproducing information at a low error rate. Since the setting is made by having only to count the number of the recording marks in this way, the optimum laser power can be very simply set. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
