A biphenyl derivative or a salt thereof has the formula (I) wherein: R1 is substituted 5-oxo-imidazol-1-yl, 1-imidazol[4,5-b]pyridine, -N[C(=O)-R6][C(R9)(R7)H], 4-pyridinyloxy, 2-pyridinylamino, benzimidazol-1-yl, cycloheptimidazol-1-yl, 5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-4-quinolyloxy, 4-quinolyloxy, 1-pyrido[2,3-]pyridimine, 4-oxo-quinazol-1-yl, imidazol-1-yl, triazol-1-yl, or 1-pyrazolo[2,3-b]triazolyl; R2 is hydrogen, halogen, -CHO, alkyl, haloalkyl, (cycloalkyl)alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, alkoxyalkyl, haloalkoxyalkyl, alkoxy, alkoxyalkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, hydroxyalkyl, nitro, -CH(OR13)(OR14), -(CH2)Y with the proviso that when R1 is substituted 1-imidazol[4,5-b]pyridine, R2 is not hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, haloalkyl, alkoxy, hydroxyalkyl, nitro, -(CH2)wNR19R20 or NHSO2R22; R3 is heteroaryl and R6, R7, R9, R13, R14, w, R19 R20, R22 and Y are as defined in the specification. The compounds are useful in the treatment of acute or chronic renal failure, renal, glomerular or mesangial cell disorders, benign prostatic hypertrophy, subarachnoid hemorrhage, ischemica, asthma, migraine, cancer or hypertension.
