PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved surface seal device suitable for use in a fully automatic device production line and usable in combination with mounting auxiliaries. SOLUTION: The surface seal device comprises a pair of cooperating seal rings. One of them is of a non-rotation type on a casing and the other serves for rotation together with a shaft. Each of the seal rings includes a bore through which the shaft passes during operation and is held in alignment with the shaft in the radial direction by a mounting member. The mounting member can be inserted into the bore and pulled out of the bore engaging therewith by the application of force in the axial direction. The seal ring is held in a mutual operation positional relationship by a pair of axial stops isolated from each other in the axial direction on the mounting member. One of the stoppers engages with the non-rotational seal ring and the other with the rotational seal ring. The axial stop engaging with the rotational seal ring is elastically held in the radial direction. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
