PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of obtaining a fine image in a small set area. SOLUTION: The image reader 1 is provided with a vertically arranged contact glass 300, a carrying belt 505 for carrying the tip of a picture rotatably arranged along the contact glass 300 up to a reading reference position T and a 1st suction part 531 for turning a 1st suction duct 532 to negative pressure by a 1st suction fan 503 and sucking a picture from a plurality of suction holes formed on the belt 505. An image is read out from the picture sucked by the belt 505 at a read position and held so as to be separated from the glass 300 at a prescribed interval by moving a carriage 301 upwards along the glass 300. Since the glass 300 is approximately vertically arranged, the set area can be reduced and the interval between the picture and the glass 300 can be increased to a degree not generating a Newton ring.
