PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical element constructed by curing a polymerizable liquid crystal material of which the various optical characteristics are stable even against heating during manufacture of an optical apparatus such as a picture display device. SOLUTION: The optical element has a supporting material and an optical functional layer prepared by curing the polymerizable liquid crystal material having a specified liquid crystal regularity on the supporting material. The optical element is subjected to a heat treatment at a specified temperature and has 5% or lower thickness decrease of the optical functional layer defined by (A-B)/A where A is the thickness of the optical functional layer after the heat treatment, and B is the thickness of the optical functional layer after the optical element is again heated for 60 minutes at the heat treatment temperature.
