PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a handle-starting type engine in which, even when an engagement part 8 of a starting handle 7 is inserted in a boss 3 with mud filled therein for starting, the mud pressed by the engagement part 8 is received by a mud invasion preventive ring 13, and the mud over the mud invasion preventive ring 13 is unlikely to reach a seal part 15 by an oil seal 10 due to a labyrinth formed of a bent space, and the oil seal 10 is not damaged due to the wear by the mud. SOLUTION: The annular mud invasion preventive ring 13 is provided between a handle locking pin 6 and the oil seal 10, and the labyrinth formed of the bent space is provided between a rear-directed space 14 facing the mud invasion preventive ring 13 from the handle locking pin 6 and a seal part 15 of a starting shaft 4 by the oil seal 10 in a handle-starting type engine in which the annular oil seal 10 is attachably/detachably fitted to a boss 3 closer to a starting gear 5 than to the handle locking pin 6, and an inner circumferential surface thereof is pressed against an outer circumferential surface of the starting shaft 4.
