A method for diagnosing and distinguishing stroke by analysing the body fluid of a patient to detect the presence and concentration of four markers of stroke wherein a first marker is myelin basic protein, a second marker is the beta isoform of S100 protein, a third marker is neuronal specific enolase, a fourth marker is a brain endothelial cell membrane protein; and from the information obtained determine whether an ischaemic or haemorrhagic cerebral event has occurred. Also detailed is a diagnostic kit using antibodies specific for each of the four named marker proteins.
