The shaft (2) carrying the pinion (3) is rigidly mounted on bearings (6,7) which prevent sideways motion. The crown wheel (5) is mounted on bearings (12,13) which allow axial motion as well as rotation and has teeth (4) which mesh with the teeth of the pinion. A ring (10) on the pinion shaft engages a flat surface (11) on the crown wheel to limit the forward movement of the crown wheel. The crown wheel is pushed forward by a ring piston (16) in an annular groove (15) in a bearing and cylinder block (14). Oil is fed under pressure from an inlet (20) via a non-return valve (19).
