The inlet (3) and exhaust valves (5) are arranged in the cylinder head in the usual way. There are rings of porous sintered material (14) in the inlet (2) and exhaust (4) passages just outside the valve seating rings (11,13). Water flows to the sintered rings through bores in the cylinder head. The water seeps through the sintered rings and evaporates, cooling the incoming air or fuel-air mixture and cooling the head (6) of the exhaust valve.
