The split radial shaft seal comprises a support ring and a membrane ring (2) with a sealing lip (3). This fits over the support ring and into a groove in its outer surface. The support ring is made up of two halves (6, 7) with cooperating Z-shaped ends (8, 9, 14, 15) which prevent sliding. A spring (10) which covers at least a semi-circle fits into an inner groove in the support ring. Independent claims are included for; 9a) a method for making the seal; and (b) use of the seal to replace one which has been removed from an aggregate.
