The invention relates to a method for reversing the direction of rotation of a two-stroke engine by specifically adjusting a misfire during coasting. In order to determine the direction of rotation of the engine with only one sensor, cyclic variations of the angular velocity of the crank mechanism during coasting are determined by using an incremental transducer. By allocating the transducer segments information on the angle position of the crank mechanism can be obtained that is referred to in conjunction with a further position information obtained through a gap of the incremental transducer to determine the direction of rotation. A corresponding suitable sensor can be used in piston engines independently of the method for determining the angle position of the crank mechanism.
