The supply line (1) feeds hydrogen at a pressure of 3 to 5 bar to a buffer reservoir (2) with a supply line (3) to a first pump or compressor (4). It compresses the hydrogen to a pressure of between 17 and 150 bar. A further gas line (5) leads to an intercooler (6). This reduces the temperature by 20 to 60 degrees C. There is a further gas supply line (7) leading to a second pump or compressor (8) raising the hydrogen to a pressure of 300 bar. The compressor output may pass to low- (10), medium- (13) and high-pressure (18) reservoirs with connections to a fuel filling connector for a vehicle.
