METHOD OF WAVE MODIFICATION AND REEF FOR WAVE MODIFICATION

An artificial reef (1) for placement on a floor of a body of water adjacent to a shore is provided. The reef (1) includes a base (1A) supporting an opposing upper surface (1B) that has a first end (A) that in use is directed away from the shore and a second end (B) that in use is directed towards the shore. The reef has a total length to total height ratio of at least 5:1 and the upper surface (1B) has a convex shape relative to the base so as to have an overall progressively decreasing positive gradient relative to the surface of the water from said first end to said second end. The artificial reef (1) may be used to control the wave breaking intensity of waves breaking over the reef. A method of constructing a reef and a method of wave modification is also claimed.
