A capsule 10 (Figs. 9 and 2), in the form of a moulded plastics body having a top 18 from which depend integral cavities 20, 22a..d, moves successively under a filter cup dispenser 42, which drops a filter cup 30 (Fig. 3) on to liquid 76 in cavity 20, and under suction device 44, which pushes the cup down into the liquid and sucks liquid into the cup through its porous bottom 32. The cup is moulded plastics, except for paper bottom 32, and its rim 40 rests on top 18 during suction, cavity 20 being widened at opposite points (Fig. 1, not shown) to allow air to pass round the edge of the rim. The dispenser 42 (Figs. 5 to 8, not shown) comprises a feed gate (56) reciprocated horizontally by a pneumatic ram, triggered by initial raising of the capsule or lowering of the dispenser, to release and positively lower the bottom cup 30 into cavity 20. Suction is continuously applied to head 80, which is lowered by ram 85 until its gasket 90 seals the cup rim 40. Subsequent raising of head 80 causes the rim 40 to engage the lower edge of guide sleeve 82, breaking the seal. The apparatus forms part of an automatic chemical analyser, described in Specification 1,224,863, wherein tungstic acid is added to diluted blood serum to precipitate the protein, which is then filtered out of a sample to be analysed. Capsules 10 and cups 30 have ledges 28, 38 which facilitate stacking without binding.
