A method for detecting compressor surging of a turbocharger comprises the steps of: a) measuring a surge influenced parameter by means of a sensor generating a first signal; b) processing said first signal to obtain a second signal which essentially comprises the surge-specific components of said first signal; c) concluding to the occurrence of compressor surging if the amplitude of said second signal exceeds a predetermined threshold.
