Detecting a pathogenic form of prion protein(s) in a sample comprising exposing a sample suspected of containing the pathogenic form of prion protein(s) to a chemical agent under conditions where the chemical agent and the prion protein(s) react to form covalent bond(s) involving the prion protein(s), and mass-spectroscopically analyzing the resulting prion protein(s) to detect the presence of the pathogenic form of the prion protein(s), is new.
