The engine has a cylinder, in which combustion of a homogeneous air/fuel mixture compressed by a piston is initiated by a time-controlled external ignition. The air/fuel ratio in a combustion chamber is greater than 1.9. The time-controlled ignition is provided by a laser light source (10), an optical transmission apparatus and a coupling optic (12).
