In bone substitute material, comprising calcium phosphate, which is produced by a Schwartzwalder process from a reticulated synthetic resin foam with a porosity in the 45-90 ppi (pores per inch) range and a corresponding structure with an open porosity of not less than 70 vol.%, the novelty is that the material has a strength of not less than 550 N, determined as breaking load with a 20 mm diameter stamp. An Independent claim is also included for a process for producing material by applying a first slip of calcium phosphate powder (I) to a reticulated synthetic resin foam, drying, burning the resin off and sintering the remaining calcium phosphate to form an open-pore foam ceramic material (A), in which the strength of the foam ceramic is increased by using a completely crystalline and phase-pure calcium phosphate as (I) and coating (A) with a second slip of the same powder, drying and sintering again, the sintering temperature in all cases being such that no phase change occurs during sintering.
