PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an optically activeα- hydroxycarboxylic acid by a simple method excellent in industrial productivity. SOLUTION: This method for producing an optically activeα- hydroxycarboxylic acid is characterized by extracting the optically activeα- hydroxycarboxylic acid contained in an aqueous solution after a hydrolysis of an optically active cyanohydrin with a solvent immiscible with water, then adding a hydrocarbon solvent to the extract liquid and crystallizing the optically activeα-hydroxy carboxylic acid from the hydrocarbon solvent-containing extract liquid.
