PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the separability of papers from a suction belt for transferring papers in an ink jet recorder which carries out double-sided printing to thin papers. SOLUTION: In printing to both faces of the paper 3a transferred by the suction belt 7 to the position of a carriage 8 with a write part, the paper is transferred to a position where a rear end of the paper 3a printed to a front face at the write part comes off from nipping by a transfer roller 1 and a leading end roller 11, and then the suction belt 7 and the transfer roller 1 are reversed to transfer the printed paper 3a in an opposite direction. The printed paper 3a is reversed by a reversing unit 12 and transferred again to the transfer roller 1 and the suction belt 7 returned to the forward rotation, so that a rear face of the paper 3a is printed at the write part. Moreover, a distance from a registration sensor detection position 10 for detecting a leading end or rear end position of the paper 3a to a printing start position 18 is made larger than a distance from the position of a transfer roller 15 to the printing start position 18, and a suction force of the suction belt 7 is nulled or weakened at the leading end and/or the rear end part of the paper 3a.
