PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To coat a pretreatment liquid uniformly on a material to be recorded at a constant speed in an image forming apparatus having an ink jet recording unit. SOLUTION: The material to be recorded supplied from a material-to-be recorded container 1 is sent into an inverting tray 5, switched back in the tray 5, and sent to the ink jet recording unit 2. Thus, conveyance of the material to the tray 5 can be conducted at a constant speed independently from conveyance of the material to the ink jet recording unit 2. Therefore the pretreatment liquid 18 is coated uniformly on the material on the way of conveying the material from the container 1 to the tray 5 at the constant speed without being affected by an influence of the conveying speed of the material at the recording unit 2. Thus, a waviness of the material or occurrence of an image quality unevenness caused by the coating unevenness of the liquid 18 can be prevented. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
