PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid-crystalline compound as a new compound, and to provide an electrolyte which uses the compound, has high ion conductivity, and is used for secondary batteries. SOLUTION: This liquid-crystalline compound represented by the general formula I: R1-Xm-(O)a-A-(O)b-Yb-R2 [(m) and (n) are each independently an integer of 3 to 10]. The compound represented by the general formula I, preferably a compound represented by the general formula II, is synthesized and an alkali metal salt is dissolved in the compound to give an electrolyte.
