SHOCK ABSORBING TYPE STEERING SHAFT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a durable and low cost shock absorbing type steering shaft capable of being easily set to the target collapse load and eliminating play and having a simple configuration. SOLUTION: This shock absorbing type steering shaft is constituted 7 by relatively displacing a tubular outer shaft 1 having a small diameter part 1a and forming a female serration 1b on its inner peripheral face and an inner shaft 2 having a large diameter part 2a and forming a male serration 2c on its outer peripheral face in the axial direction after plastically deforming tip parts of the small diameter part 1a and the large diameter part 2a in the direction of diameter by pressurizing an outer peripheral face of an engaging part of the small diameter part 1a onto an inner side in the direction of diameter while the tip part of the small diameter part 1a is engaged with the tip part of the large diameter part 2a. The small diameter part 1a and the large diameter part 2a or only a part to be pressed of the small diameter part 1a have low rigid shapes to such extent that slide resistance force between both shafts 1 and 2 is properly reduced.
