PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet printer capable of obtaining reliability in indicating a residual ink amount by accurately recognizing the residual ink amount in an ink cartridge, and conducting a suitable warning operation in response to the residual ink amount and a good image forming operation. SOLUTION: A method for calculating the residual ink amount of the ink jet printer comprises the steps of acquiring a total pixel counted value obtained based on a total ink amount in the ink cartridge and an unconsumed pixel counted value obtained by subtracting the consumed pixel counted value from the total pixel counted value, and obtaining the residual ink amount by a ratio of the unconsumed pixel counted value to the total pixel counted value. In this case, the method further comprises the steps of deciding a correction coefficient based on an area coverage and correcting the consumed pixel counted value according to the correction coefficient.
