PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing high-purity 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4- piperidone in high yield under a lighter load on the environment than that of a conventional method. SOLUTION: This method for producing the 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidone comprises using a crude reactional liquid obtained by reacting acetone and/or an acetone condensate with ammonia in the presence of a catalyst. Furthermore, the method comprises (1) a first step of treating the crude reactional liquid with a strong alkaline aqueous solution and separating and recovering an oily layer containing the 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidone, (2) a second step of then treating the recovered oily layer with a new strong alkaline aqueous solution and separating and recovering the oily layer containing the 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4- piperidone together with the aqueous layer containing the strong alkali and (3) a step of reusing the aqueous layer recovered in the second step and containing the strong alkali as the strong alkaline aqueous solution in the first step of treating the new crude reactional liquid.
