<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transflective liquid crystal display device having excellent visibility wherein display brightness especially in transmissive mode is improved. <P>SOLUTION: In the transflective liquid crystal display device 20, a liquid crystal 26 is held between upper and lower substrates 24 and 23 disposed opposite to each other, a transflective layer 35 consisting of cholesteric liquid crystal layers 34r, 34g and 34b are provided on the lower substrate 23 and a backlight 22 is provided. Optical retardation plates 42 and 44 and polarizers 43 and 45 are provided in this order from the sides of the substrates on the outer surfaces of the substrates 24 and 23, respectively. A pigmented color filter layer 32 having pigmented films 31r, 31g and 31b transmitting color light having the same colors as those of light selectively reflected at the cholesteric liquid crystal layers 34r, 34g and 34b, respectively, underlies the transflective layer 35. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
