PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain satisfactory moving picture quality by suppressing occurrence of a hysteresis phenomenon when changing over display. SOLUTION: In this driving method of a liquid crystal display element, one field period is divided into two field periods and dark display having roughly constant luminance is performed in the field period of one side and bright display which is made to coincide with the gradation of display is performed in the field period of another side. Now, a liquid crystal element is changed over to halftone display (in short, display having the transmissivity of the order of 0.4) after it performed the dark display over several frame periods as shown in Figure 3 (a), the repeating frequency of the field periods and the like are made to be proper values so that luminous failure just after the changeover is not made to be recognized.
