PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve reading efficiency and maintain reading quality in high- speed processing by eliminating vibration in reading an original even in high- speed reading and by reading a white reference board at high speed to perform shading correction. SOLUTION: In this image reader, 1st and 2nd carriages constituting a scanning optical system are moved in a subscanning direction by a driving motor 8 in order to read the original positioned on a contact glass 13 and read the white reference board 22, whereby the shading correction is performed.
